The first 2019 Town Hall meeting was held at the historic St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Emancipation Avenue. More than 42 participants attended. The meeting was created to gather participatory research that would provide data for an analysis that addressed whether KPFT was meeting the standards of public broadcasting through programming and policy.
The model used was Table Discussion Sessions that were interactive and flexible in its design for a town hall meeting. The topics chosen were Building Bridges, Not Walls, Art/Activism, Ending Racism,, KPFT, A Non-Profit, Developing a Community Calendar, Redressing KPFT's Mission, Programming (Music, Cultural and News and Information). The atmosphere of respect and comfort, allowing participants an active and influential role in decisions which might affect their lives and relationship with KPFT, was the primary goal, and we believe that we achieved it. The atmosphere was circumspect, but respectful. People engaged with one another, providing needed information and analysis about the stations policies and standards as well as overarching analysis of independent media as a whole.
Report by the Community Advisory Board of KPFT
The Community Advisory Board meets each month on the first Saturday of the month at SHAPE Community Center, 3815 Live Oak Street, Houston, X 77004. You don't have to be anything other than a listener and a willingness to address the needs of programmers and listeners through the KPFT listening are.
We believe independent media is a needed element of society, especially as it relates to the 2019-2020 political climate. It is more than news and music, but truth and ethics. The world is changing and it becomes necessary to find the tools for listening to the various communities that media should serve with facts and relevant information.
The Community Advisory Board is providing documents of the town hall meeting on May 18, 2019. Please feel free to share these documents with your organizations and groups. Contact us directly with any questions.
